William Henry LEE is my wife’s ggg-grandfather. According to his tombstone, he was born August 8, 1798. The 1850 census says he was born in South Carolina, but other indirect sources say he was born in Maryland, Virginia, and Tennessee. William married Rebecca SEWELL in Clinton Co., Ohio on February 5, 1818 with the consent of his step-father, Richard CAST.
According to author Gayle Kamp, the CASTs were originally from Iredell Co., North Carolina, and came to Clinton Co. via McMinn Co., Tennessee, Coffee Co., Tennessee and Clark Co., Kentucky. Richard CAST’s eldest daughter, Nancy Cast VARNER, was born in Tennessee in 1797. His third child, James CAST, was born in Ohio (then the Northwest Territory) in 1802. So we may be able to conclude that the CASTs came to Clinton Co., Ohio between those dates.
The 1820 census lists William and family in Vernon Twp. in Clinton Co. They moved to Vermilion Co., Illinois in 1829, and resided in Vance Twp.
Who were William Henry LEE’s parents, and when did they come to Clinton Co., Ohio? Did he have any full or half-siblings? There is a John LEE in Union Twp., Clinton Co. in 1820, and an Anna LEE married a John STEWART in 1814. Are they related? (There are also LEEs in neighboring Warren Co., Ohio, but they appear to be unrelated.) Did his mother marry Richard CAST before or after arriving in Clinton Co.? Did the LEEs come to Clinton Co. with the CASTs?
